THROWING OUT THE FIRST PITCH!!!!

It's always fun and spontaneous having Chris Skinner for a husband and a Daddy!  Chris came home one day and said that he got tickets for us to go to the Pelican's Baseball game AND that Caleb could throw out the first pitch!!!
Chris is slightly extroverted.....and likes to talk to everyone he sees......SO he has been friends with one of the employees at the Stadium.  Gandy called Chris to see if Caleb or Alethia would want to throw out the pitch.  Alethia said no but Caleb said YES!!!!

Daddy couldn't get to the field because of stairs, so Gramps came and walked him out tot he mound!  He was soooo excited!

Also our WONDERFUL FRIENDS, the St. Clairs, were visiting for the weekend.....so EVERYONE came!!!!  Kasey and Kaedyn cuddled....

Dallas and Alyssa came of course!

Alethia and Kamryn are great little buddies!!!

What a fun night.....thanks Daddy!!!

When Caleb saw Chris he ran and jumped into his arms......That boy sure does love his Daddy!

THE HEART OF A FRIEND

You know, friendship is something that all of us want in our lives to some extent, I believe.  Even the most introverted introvert probably wants one good friend, just one.

Something that I have noticed over the years of being married to Chris and living in the "world of quadriplegia" is that friendship changes a lot.  When you are not paralyzed friendships can be easy to develop and easy to keep.  But when you are paralyzed part of the relationship with a friend involves you asking for help when you don't want to have to ask for help, and involves them giving help when they don't necessarily feel like it.  For instance, for chris to go surfing with his friends, one of them has to meet us at the car, carry him into his beach chair or carry him onto the beach.  They need to be willing to go to a beach that is accessible enough for Chris to get out there which means they have to be willing to move from a "favorite" beach spot.  We need to ask for help carrying regular beach bags and medical supplies for the occasional "unexpected" need.   They need to be willing to help Chris get repositioned in his chair or do pressure reliefs while he's in his beach wheelchair (so that he doesn't get a pressure sore wound and have to lie in bed for weeks trying to heal).  They need to understand that he can't regulate his body temperature, so he may get overheated much faster than them and have to leave early, or he may be too cold to stay for a long time.  He may need help putting shirts on or off, getting water when needed or eating if they are there long.  And so on.....

This is not specific to Chris, this is just a brief glimpse, a small example of being friends with someone who is disabled.  In a lot of ways it is a "normal" friendship, but in many ways it is VERY different.

This is what makes the friends that we have met, and kept over the years, so powerful and precious.  We have met some remarkably giving people everywhere we have lived.....Virginia, Texas, NC, and now SC.   In the past few months we have met some new friends who love to surf and have made it their mission to help their friends enjoy the waves too.

These top pictures are Luke and Chris catching the first-ever waves on Chris' new board.  Luke, Brandon, James, and their awesome wives Erin, Kara, and Ellen have gone as far as starting an organization to raise money to buy adaptive surfboards for people with disabilities.  They have been instrumental in creating the adaptive surfing division in Eastern Surfing Association's surf competitions this summer.  They just want their friends to be able to enjoy what they enjoy.....the sun and the surf.

Chris tells me all the time how great it feels just to be out of his wheelchair without something pressing on his back.  Normally he has his back pressing against something 24 hours per day - his wheelchair, the bed, or a recliner.  BUT in water it's totally different.  FREEDOM!  The freedom that God is giving him now through these amazing friends is incredible.  The freedom to float, the freedom to move in totally different ways, the freedom to ride and feel the power of the ocean again.  There was nothing like it for him as a kid and teenager and there's nothing like it for him now.  Surfing is in his blood and he's FINALLY BACK!

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

TRUE FRIENDS

When we started meeting friends at church, we met some super cool people!  One of the families whose friendship has meant so much to us has been Kate and Trapper and their awesome kiddos!  Trapper and Chris knew each other from somewhere in the past, but even now they haven't fully figured it out.  They have several mutual friends and they both surfed with some of the same people, so we're just assuming it was from that!  So sweet how God brings people in and out of our lives at different times.  It just reminds me of His humor and love and magnificent plans of putting certain people in our paths throughout our lives - so intentional and such a gift.

I have been so blessed by both Kate and Trapper in so many ways.  Before any talk or plans for surfing ever evolved, Trapper was talking to Chris about how he could get him back in the water.  Trapper would bring his shovel to the beach and dig out a "sand chair" for Chris.  He'd carry him from his wheelchair onto the beach and help him get set up wherever he wanted to sit.  It gave Chris his first chance to get back on the beach, close to the water where he could enjoy the kids and play in the sand with them.

When Chris talked to Trapper about wanting to teach Caleb to surf, he jumped right on it and gave Caleb one of his old boards.  He went out with us just about every weekend at the end of last summer and surfed with Caleb and carried Chris wherever he wanted to go.  I can't tell you how much of a gift that is to me for the help, to Chris for the freedom it gives him in being a husband and a father on the beach with his family, and for the kids to be able to have their whole family on the beach.....being able to be close enough to their Daddy to cuddle in the sand and bury his feet.  It's these moments of greater and greater freedom that their friendship has brought to us.

Kate has been such a wonderful friend to me.  So consistent in keeping in touch with me and so quick to help in any way.  She's made dinner for us, done our dishes, carried our bags, wiped our kids' noses, and been a true encourager to each of us.  I am so blessed by her drive to know the Lord and please Him with her life.  Her heart for God is tremendous.  It did not take long to realize that she passionately loves the Lord and wants to honor Him in everything she does.  Watching her and listening to her pursuit of God has encouraged me to really kneel before Him.  Kate's love for the Lord reminds me of Mary in the bible who poured out her best, most expensive perfume on Jesus and washed His feet with her hair, wanting nothing more than to sit at His feet and bless Him with her heart and her actions.  That is Kate.

These pictures are just one afternoon of memories that we have spent together.  Hopefully many more to come!

SWEET FRIENDS

One of our favorite families was able to visit us twice this summer....they brought adventure both times!!!!!

Kasey and Dallas were some of our first babysitters for Caleb and Alethia.  They used to watch them for entire weekends when Chris and I would be out of town when they were still itty-bitty.  Aunt Kasey and Uncle Dallas always came to the rescue and loved our little munchkins so fully.  I'm so thankful for them and love them so much.....despite the many miles that have been between us over the years!  I think for sure that our new home is the most fun place to visit compared to other places we've lived!

Caleb always gets flooded with girls during these visits but he loves his little buddies.

This is one of my favorite pictures of them!!  Sweet Kamryn is 2 years younger but so much fun to play with!

And our sweet Kaedyn......this time gave us quite a welcoming....

About 15 hours before this picture was taken we were calling 911 and scared to death for our little Kaedyn when she had a febrile seizure just after she arrived.  Whoa, that was a scary couple of hours!  But on Day 2 of their visit, all is well and she's full of personality again!
Thank you Jesus!

Back to our 3 little buddies....

We love these little tan faces......so great to share our new home with our friends.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE SCHOOL.....

Yes, this is a delayed post (I'm about 2 months behind in posts but I'm getting there! I don't want to skip ahead.....would hate to forget a memory!).

The day was here......first day of kindergarten!  The night before Aunt Peggy and Uncle Mike surprised us with a visit and some goodies for the school year!

The kids ran to them and jumped into their arms as always...

They opened all the new school clothes that they had brought.....Caleb has worn this sweatshirt to school everyday so far!  I'd say they chose well!

It's so great to feel so loved by this wonderful couple and family!

Such sweet memories....

A bit later when jammies were on, we attempted a family pic to mark the memorable day.  Of course we attempted it several times.....

May not be "picture perfect" but they warm my heart...so, so much!

Ready or not, here comes school!

S'MORES

Uncle Jeremy and Aunt Pam - one of our favorite homes to visit!
Since the kids were old enough to eat marshmallows, Uncle Jeremy and Aunt Pam have had the tradition of building a fire and roasting marshmallows for s'mores.

The kids help Uncle Jeremy find kindling and build the fire while Aunt Pam gathers all the food and supplies......

Let the roasting begin!

It takes concentration, but the result is sooooo sweet!
Thank you Uncle Jeremy and Aunt Pam for loving us!!!

FIRST WEEKEND IN VIRGINIA!!!!

We landed in Virginia on a Saturday and headed to our friends house, Dallas and Kasey.  A great first stop!  We stayed with them for the weekend and spent our first Sunday out a the river.....fishing for the first time!

Daddy gave instructions before starting.....

Alethia took a dip in the river.....a rather COLD dip!

Caleb listened to Daddy's instructions and followed Dallas' hands as he learned to cast....and he actually caught 3 FISH!!!

And Alethia caught one too!!!!  (she actually caught this teeny one with a bucket, but caught a "real" one with a rod!)

Super fun way to be welcomed back to our home!

SPECIAL FRIENDS

This family is near and dear to our hearts.....we've spent every holiday cooking out with them and eating fudgsicles......we've spent countless afternoons and mornings at each others' homes......they are giving, joyful, and strong......very, very strong.  May the Lord continue to hold each of you in the palm of His mighty hand.....and may He give you the strength you need each day, to endure in Him and find rest in Him.  Thank you for being such faithful friends....

We miss you.....facetime isn't enough, but we'll make it work!
